- Grab a standard 9/16-inch high-speed steel drill bit.
- Turn the bit around. You want the smooth cylindrical shank, not the fluted cutting tip. A 9/16" shank measures exactly 14.288mm.
- Slide that smooth shank into the female bore of your hose fitting or pump outlet:
- If the shank slips inside easily: The bore is 15.0mm. You have an M22-15mm fitting.
- If the shank stops and won't enter: The bore is 14.0mm (14.28mm won't fit in a 14.0mm hole). You have an M22-14mm fitting.
3. The Visual Wall-Thickness Check
Coins won't give you precision millimeter tolerances. But your eyes can spot the pin thickness once you know what to check.
A 14mm male stem has a visibly thinner brass wall than a 15mm stem. The central water passage is the exact same size on both fittings. That means the extra millimeter on a 15mm fitting goes into thicker brass around the O-ring groove. If the center pin looks heavy and fills most of the collar cavity, it's 15mm. If there's plenty of daylight around the center pin, it's 14mm.

Here's why. Teflon tape is engineered strictly for tapered pipe threads like NPT. On NPT fittings, threads are cut on a slight cone angle (1 in 16 taper). As you tighten NPT joints, thread crests and roots crush together. Teflon tape fills microscopic thread voids to form the seal.
M22 fittings work on an entirely different mechanical principle:
- The threads don't seal water. They're straight, parallel metric threads. Their only job is mechanical clamping force to hold the joint tight.
- The real seal is an internal O-ring. The rubber ring seats against a smooth internal bore.
- Tape blocks collar travel. Wrapping tape around M22 threads bulks up the pitch. That prevents the outer spin collar from threading down its full 6 to 8 rotations.
- The O-ring can't seat. Because the collar jams early, the brass stem never reaches the bore's sealing zone. Your leak actually gets worse.
- Tape shreds destroy pumps. Strands of PTFE tape tear off in the water stream. They drift into your pump check valves, lodge under the unloader piston, or plug up 1.1mm foam cannon orifices.
If an M22 fitting leaks, it's never a thread problem. It's either a 14mm vs 15mm mismatch or a damaged rubber O-ring. Keep the Teflon tape in the plumbing drawer.
